Gochang-gun have geological character that east and north is high and west and south is low. East mountain area which form a boundary with Jangsung-gun, Jeonnam belongs to Noryeong mountain chain’s stem. There are many mountain like Bangjangsan(743m), Bangmunsan(640m), Chugryeongsan(621m), Gosan(527m). In north there are mountains lower than east like Soyosan(444m)・Gyeongsusan(444m)・Hwasil mountain peak(403m) and etc. In south side except Songrimsan(295m)・Hanjesan(210m), jilly land lower than 100m are well developed and alluvial plain is formed between mountain.

Buan-gun is made of north’s plain area, east’s jilly land and west-south side’s mountain area. North side of Buan-gun is linked with Honam plain area through Gyehwa-do reclaimed land and Gobucheon・river mouth of Dongjingang river(Baeksan-myeon). Byeonsan peninsula forming mountain zone is divided into inland Naebyeonsan mountain and outland Oebyeonsan mountain. There are thirty-five islands like Sangwangdeungdo island and Hawnagdeungdo island in West coast area. In Naebyeonsan area Gisangbong mountain peak(509m)・Ognyeobong mountain peak・Gabnamsan mountain are spread and it is one of ten beautiful place of Korea in Jeonggamrok.

There are serveral natural monuments such as Seonunsa Camellia forest(natural nomument no.184), Dosolam Jangsasong(no.354), Asan-myeon Samin-ri Ivy(no.367), Daesan-myeon Jungsan-ri pop tree(no.183), Gosu-myeon Munsusa Maple forest(no.463), Buan-myeon Sudong-ri Caterpillar(no.494), Gochang-eup Gyochon-ri Melia azedarach(no.503) in Gochang-gun.
In Buan-gun there are Byeonsan-myeon Docheong-ri Horned Holly Habitat(no.122), Gyeogpo-ri silver magnolia colony(no.123), Junggye-ri Holly Habitat(no.124). In mud flat area, various creatures like umboniumt thomasi, surf clam, barnacle, shuttles hoppfish, japanese ghost crab, acanthogobius hasta, green eel goby, capitella capitata, seaweeds and seagull are living.

From sedimentary rock in these area you can observe several sedimentation and sedimentary rocks created before・during・after volcanic activity. You can observe paleoenvironment and sedimentation of rock. Observe softly modified structure and various synchronism and transformation structure of sedimentary rock. you can learn about formatino mechanism. Through peperite, you can observe and study volcanic activity synchronized with sedimentation and interaction between water and unconsolidated sediments. Sedimentary rocks in Gochang-Buan have high geological・educational value because you can learn and observe development of sediment system by volcanic activity・formation process of sedimentary・develop process of sedimentary rock affected directly or indirectly by volcanic activity.
