Meaning of Ecotourism as Alternative

In 2013, Cuba liberalized traveling after a half century. When Germany was divided long time ago, ‘Liberalization of Traveling’ opened up the path toward unification. While there have been circumstances of occasion, it was possible based on the demands from citizens. The path of civilization was the Path of Travel and Path of Exchange. There existed ‘Communication’ and ‘Sharing’. The high-tech IT industry is also in contact with capital power through expansion of communication and sharing. Like this, travel and tourism hold potentials and possibilities much bigger than we imagine.

The background of ecotourism emerged from the reflective thinking on cultural damage, decrease in animal and plant population, and environmental pollution of tourist sites due to excessive industrial expansion of tour or traveling. Also, as ecotourism holds campaign and industrial characteristics, it bears a challenging task where area pursuing ecological value and area circulating the capital based on such value co-exist together. This shares the context with social economy such as commons and shared value and it makes people to think about the meaning of ecotourism to people.

Jeollabuk-do is implementing an ecotourism policy which recovers the environmental value of meaningful ecological resource in each region and takes the community as an axis. In the policy, each city and province cultivate ecotourism site focusing on metropolitan local government. As the policy is attempted nation-widely for the first time, it will become the constant model for ecotourism policies for Ministry of Environment and other cities and provinces.

Thus, instead of having excessive expectations or vague concerns over ecotourism, it is important to proceed by each step like walking along the forest and water calmly. The independent role of ecotourism is to fulfill responsibility and duty through a cooperative system with residents and visitors. While the growth may vary depending on the region’s capability and understanding on policy, individuals and community need to grow and expand independence and value continuously through such process. This is because benefit from ecotourism influences on residents, visitors, and region directly and on future generations indirectly.

The future prospect for ecotourism is highly likely to expand for increased demand for ecosystem service, important issues in living resources, recovery of North Korean forest, and ecological peace in DMZ. In such changes, Jeollabuk-do ecotourism shall be the process rather than result in creating the society where mutual benefits from ecological resources and cooperation are circulated broadly. I also hope the ecotourism of each region to become a small seed for touching the hearts of visitors.
