Gochang-gun Cheolligil

The history of Gochang-gun is very unique, compared to other cities in Jeollabuk-do.

In Baekje era, it was called as ‘Moryangburi-hyeon’, and in the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok during the Unified Silla era, it was named Gochang-hyeon. At that time, it was the important hyeon of Muryeong-gun, which is currently Younggwang-gun, Jeonnam. In Goryeo era, it was the important hyeon of Gobu-gun. Wherever it was, it was a central region.

During the Joseon era, it was part of Naju Jingwan, and its status was elevated to a gun, during the reign of King Gojong, and was made part of Jeollanam-do. In 1907, it was made part of Jeollabuk-do again, and in 1914, it joined Mujang and Heungdeok. After 1955, it had its current status of 1 eup 13 myeon.

The Gochang-gun section of Jeonbuk Cheolligil consists of a course that includes Ungok wetlands which was naturally formed after people left due to the building of the reservoir, a trail that goes along the fortress walls of Gochangeupseong.

The wetlands prove the preservation of the ecology, and we can see how nature recovered itself in a place where people used to reside in. You can feel how small and powerless we humans are when seeing such powerful scene of restoration. Gochangeupseong-gil is a rather strenuous path that even has the saying that if you circle the fortress three times, you will live a long and healthy life. So even if you only circle the fortress once, you will feel that you are much healthier than before.

Gochang-gun has diverse resources, and the Jeonbuk Cheolligil Gochang-gun course introduces you to the charms of the city.

As such, Ungok wetland has proved the restoration abilities of the great nature, and was recognized as the Ramsar Wetland.

Ungok wetland information center. You can enter the wetland through the upward slope beside it.

After you pass by the Dolmen museum and head to the dolmen collection, you will come across a small Ungok Wetland information center. Here, you can get detailed explanations and promotional materials about the Ungok Wetland.

Beside the information center, there is the upward slope. You can walk toward the ungok wetland when you pass the slope. When you look back from the middle, you will be surprised at the magnificence of the dolmen collection. However, you actually have not seen half of it yet.

We can sense that the wetland is being managed properly as they are careful that even the smallest factors might cause a negative influence to the wetlands.

The old housing site is returning to the nature.

Along the downward slope, the deck road continues. You will be surprised at the restoration ability of the nature. You will keep thinking to yourself whether this place really was a place with fields and houses. The walls and pillars that have crumbled are already blending with the nature.

Flowers and trees that are blooming along with the wetlands.

You can observe the ecological pond and ecological puddles. If you walk in spring, you will see frog eggs and salamander eggs. In summer, you will feel among the energy of nature how the humans have damaged the nature under the excuse of development.

After the wetlands, the trails heading to the Ungok reservoir is comfortable to walk on. In the bird observatory at Ungok reservoir, you can observe the ecology of the birds which live in the wetlands.

Ungok Wetland Ecological Road Course 2

Length 10km
Road Name Forest and Hill road
Time 3 hr 30 mins
Main Course Information Center – Ungok wetland ecological park – bird observatory – Yonggye village – Information center

This is a course that circles the Ungok wetlands around the Ungok reservoir.

Many endangered animals such as otters, leopard cats, common buzzards, and natural monuments such as the Chinese sparrowhawk, common kestrel and some 864 animals and plants live here.

The deck for the trekkers are narrow. This is to minimize the area to cover the wetlands for the convenience of the wetlands, not the people.

We are just merely borrowing and walking on the wetland, so we should carefully walk at all times. We enjoy the wetland but also be careful not to damage the naturally restored site.

Ungok Seowon is a romantic building you will meet at the Doole-gil. This is a seowon that carries out an annual ritual.

After you circle around the reservoir, you will see the common kestrel from the bird observatory. Perhaps you are invited to the water birds’ festival.

What could have been the animal that jumped into the
water when it noticed the approaching footsteps?

The road to Yonggye Village that has well-preserved the nature is a place where you can see the ecology of the wetlands from close. You should walk carefully because you might disturb the waterbirds.  You can see various fish in the reservoir, and in the puddle,
you can observe red-bellied frogs. After you pass by Yonggye Village,
you will arrive at the information center and end the ecological tour.
