Sunchang-gun Cheolligil

It is in the upper part of the Seomjin River, and has a unique beauty because a rare geological rock is there.

Sunchang-gun was called Dosil-gun in Baekje era, and Sunhwa-gun in Unified Silla era. In Goryeo era, it was called Sunchang-hyeon, and since then from the Joseon era, it has been called Sunchang-gun.

It is located in the south east part of Jeonbuk, which is a mountainous region. It has the Gangcheon Mountain county park, and famous trekking places such as the Naejang Mountain ridge. Also, it is in the upper part of the Seomjin River, and has a unique beauty because a rare geological rock is there.

With clear water, clean air, pollution-less environment, Sunchang-gun is known for longevity.

Sunchang is also known for its ‘pastes(jang)’, which cannot be omitted when speaking of Korean food.
‘Sunchang chili paste’ has a nationwide recognition, and due to this popularity,
the ‘Sunchang Korean Table d’hote’ is known by most of the gourmet epicures.

The Sunchang-gun section in Jeonbuk Cheolligil consists of paths that you will feel like you are becoming younger and younger as you walk.

In Janggunmok-gil, you can walk along Seomjin river next to the Yonggwol mountail. Bizarre-shaped rocks in the side of the river can only be see in Sunchang-gun. The Yogang Rock and the breathtaking sceneries are incredible.

Gangcheon Mountain Path is a path where you can see various waterfalls and valleys along the Gangcheon Mountain that has been selected as the county park. There is a part where you can walk with your bare feet.

The Path of Scholars is a path where you can see the houses of scholars such as Haseo Kim Inhoo (King Injong’s teacher from Joseon era), and Kim Byeongro, the first Chief Justice of Supreme Court, all from Sunchang-gun.

The mountains and hills, and the dignity of scholars. The paths of Sunchang-gun has its unique charm. You can walk the roads of Sunchang-gun when the autumn leaves flow in the riverside. On that path, anyone can be a scholar.

Janggunmok-gil is a path that invigorates you along the clean valley
in the upper side of Seomjin river.

After passing by Gumi Bridge, the journey begins. It is a region at the upper part of the river, but there is abundant flow of water, so you can do a lot of water sports. The region is nice to walk by, enjoying the view of the Yonggwol Mountain and the clear water of Seomjin river.

The water is so clear that you are able to see the bottom of the river. Unlike other rivers, the big rocks and various bizarre-shaped rocks are located around the river and on the bottom of the river. These rocks look so mystic that you could gaze at the river all day.  

 You will then pass by Masil Lodging Complex and the Camping site. If you are a camper, you could camp here after enjoying trekking along the upper side of Seomjin river.

It also has road for bicycles, so it is comfortable to walk here.

The next part of the course has a signboard that says, ‘A path which is comfortable to walk for expectant mothers.’ This path is well-paved because it is also used for bicycle riders,
so it will be comfortable to walk here. Also, the clear water and the scenery of the mountains should be good for prenatal care.

After you pass the stone gate, follow along the Janggunmok Hyeonsu bridge,
and then you will encounter the Yogang Rock.

Yogang Rock and the surrounding rocks. They seem to have been eroded for a long time.

Yogang Rock that is located at the most ideal spot has a mysterious posture. There is a myth that if you release yourself here you could get a boy. The size and the miraculous spirit here let the villagers worship the stone as their guardian.

The rocks surrounding this rock have been eroded by water over time, so they look very unique.

After you pass by the Chinese characters on the wall that says, ‘Enjoying mountains and waters’, you will arrive at the resting point of the Healing Forest of Yonggwol Mountain. The toxins in you will be gone, and you will be filled with a new energy from the forest. You can smell the scent of the fully-bloomed flowers while walking among the flowers.

In front of the Masil Lodging Complex, you can cross the stepping stones and come back to the departure point. You will feel lighter than before.

Gangcheonsan-gil

Gangcheon Mountain County Park is a proud natural resource of Sunchang-gun.

The journey starts at Gangcheonsan County Park’s ticket booth. From the start of the mountain trails, you will get excited. The Byeongpung waterfall you will encounter in a short while is very beautiful. It indeed flows like silk over the Byeongpung rock.

The  freshness of the falling water will make you feel pleasant.

The path up to Gangcheon Temple. There are many who walk with bare feet in the forest. There is even a signboard that says it’s good to walk here with bare feet. As such, the trails are well-managed. Don’t look around to see what others do, but try boldly removing your shoes. How long has it been since you stepped on soil with your bare feet?

Gangcheon Temple is a temple that has been built by Doseonguksa in AD 887, during the reign of Silla’s Queen Jinseong. It exceeds a thousand-year-old temple.

Samindae which you can see from the opposite side is a gravestone that commemorates Sunchang-gun governor Kimjeong, Damyang governor Park Sang, Muan governor Ryu Ok who asked for the return of Shin, who was deposed a queen.

After passing by Gangcheon mountain’s Hyeonsu bridge, you will see Gujanggun waterfall. The three streams water that falls on the big cliff is magnificent. Maybe it’s the dignity of the three Samindae on each stream.

Main Course Hunmong-hae – Gain Kim Byeongro’s Birthplace– Nakdeokjeong

Try walking like a scholar along the Seomjin River, relaxedly.

Hunmongjae, is a study hall built by Haseo Kim Inhu, a teacher of Kim Injong from the Joseon era. Hunmongjae raised some great scholars such as Songgang Jeongcheol, Jo Heemun, Yang Jajing, Byeon Seongon and others.

In Daehak Rock, a big rock that sits about 30 people, there is the handwriting of Songgang Jeongcheol.

Along the well-made deck, you can leisurely walk and the road will continue until you meet Gain Kim Byeongro’s  birthplace.

Haseo Kim Inhu’s 15th descendant, Gain Kim Byeongro, was the first Chief of Supreme Court in Korea. The family has the straightforward disposition.
Maybe the energy of the nature contributed as well.

After you climb up the hills, you will reach Nakdeokjeong. The descendants erected the pavilion in the place where Haseo Kim Inhu chatted with Gangron in order to commemorate them. Since you finish the course here, this has to be the perfect path of scholars.
