Jangsu-gun, A crucial region in Jeollabuk-do

Because there is a long stream of water, it is called Jangsu. It is a region where the river is long and the mountains are high, and also a crucial region in Jeollabuk-do along with Muju and Jinan.

It is the start of the 1000-li-long Geum River, and the center to the ecological environment. Like a region in a high altitude, the temperature of night and day are different, thus the apples are very tasty. Other agricultural products are also nationally popular.

From the Goryeo era, it was Jansu-hyeon, but since 1896, it became Jangsu-gun, and it has many heritages such as Namdeokyu Mountain and Jangan mountain county park, and such other famous ecological resources.

In particular, there is the Ddeunbong pond where the Geum River starts, and this solidifies the history of the region’s name. The water that flows from the small pond connects to the West coast, and this tells us the what kind of meaning this river and Jansu-gun has in Jeollabuk-do.

The Jeonbuk Cheolligil Jangsu-gun section consists of the Baekdu Mountain ridge
Masil-gil which used to be the former trekking course of Jangsu-gun.

King Taejo Leesunggye saw a phoenix rising high from this pond and decided that he will reign, so this is not just a common path.

The trip starts from the entrance of Jangan Mountain County Park.

After you pass by the trail along the clear valley, stone piles and Neodeol area, you will feel that the valley gets deeper. The trail that was nice to walk on will change to wooden deck path, and you will go deeper into the valley.

Banghwa-dong where the trees are dense. It’s indeed a beautiful trail.

The Jangan Mountain County park with great nature has a lot of endangered species, and it is the resting habitat of natural monuments.

You will meet Yongso while you walk in the freshness of Deoksam Valley that as a lot of wild flowers and plants. The sceneries of Lower Yongso and Upper Yongso are mysterious especially with the myths and legends of the father, mother and the child dragons.

The rock in the upper part of the Upper Yongso, has a go-board carved on it.

The go-board on the rock of the Upper Yongso lets you imagine all about the gods hanging around nearby. The gods would have sat on the wide rock, drank and played go.
When you sit on the rock, imagine this and take a rest, you will feel how fast time flies.

At the lower Yongso, you will see the wonders of the rocky cliffs and the depth of the pond. You will then get curious about how letters could be carved on such a place.
The waters will flow rapidly as if it is laughing at you thinking about it.

As you walk around Yongso, the path splits into two in between the waterfall. The right road is more difficult and thrilling, and the road on the left is more comfortable. You can switch sides in the middle of the trail through stepping stones, so you can enjoy various paths.

Along the clear valley, you will meet Banghwa Waterfall. The waters fall from a height of 110meter. This is an artificial waterfall made by the water from Banghwa Dam, so you should go there at the right time.

After passing by the lodging facilities in the forest, you can head into the trails.

The Banghwadong family vacation site is a vacation site where families can visit, and it is the very first family vacation site built in Korea. There is the Auto Campsite and lodging faciltiies, and the wood experience centers, so it is worth visiting.

To go back, you can take the path you took to get here, or you can also walk to the other side of the waterfall. The strolling paths to enjoy the nature are well made, so you will be able to enjoy yourself.

The name of this place, the main river stem of Jeolla-do and Chungcheong-do, has an interesting history.

Lee Sunggye dreamt of a phoenix rising to the sky. So he woke up and tried to find the place he saw in his dreams. There was a pond, so he took the water from the pond and prayed, and thus became a King. This is, therefore, a place with an incredible legend. The name Ddeunbong Pond was given because a phoenix rose from it.

You can then take a look at then meaning of Ddeunbong Pond, the ecological reports, and the value of Geum River in Ddeunbong Pond Ecological Park. The various visual materials and experiencing programs, as well as the exhibition facilities are very well prepared.

In Autumn, the place has a more beautiful scenery.

After you climb the long deck stairs, you will reach the resting point. You can take a rest for a while and meet with Imdo, Ddeunbong Pond. You will feel touched at the scene where the small pond becomes such a big river and flows into the west sea. Until a few years ago, the pond water was edible, but currently, you cannot drink it. One would wish that he could fill in his stomach with Geum River.

Main Course Deoksan Village – Jisilgaji – Dokkaebi Cave – Jangan Culture and Arts Village

Jisilgaji is more like an exotic utopia to those from the urban areas.

You start the tour from the entrance of the hiking trail of Beomyeondong, located near Deoksanje. This is trail that lets you forget about the busy daily life and appreciate Jangan Mountain and the surrounding valleys.

The Jisilgaji located at 750highland in Jangan Mountain is known as one of the most remote areas.

Jisilgaji could only be visited by climbing several mountains from Jangsu-gun, so it is lucky of you to meet Jisilgaji within the course. Jisilgaji which means that anything can grow well because of the fertile land, is more like an exotic utopia to those from the urban areas. Electricity was provided in this area since 2010.

The mountain paths are full of booming flowers in spring, and autumn leaves in autumn.

When you pass by the Dokkaebi Wishing Pagoda, you will meet Dokkaebi Cave which is known for the inverse icicles. You can make a wish here.

After you leave Jangan Mountain, you will arrive at Jangan Culture and Arts Village.
This place renovated a school that was shut down.
You can meet Dokkaebi here and there in this place.

When you look back and see Jangan Mountain, you will feel like that maybe the beautiful trails you walked on was a gift from the dokkaebis. It is that enjoyable.
