Iksan-si Cheolligil

Iksan-si that used to be the center
of the sophisticated Baekje culture

Iksan-si that used to be the center of the sophisticated Baekje culture used to be called ‘Som-li’ in Korean. It means that a cloud looks like it is entering a village when seen from far.

After that, during the Japanese colonization era, the place became the center of all transportation as the Honam Line was built in order to forcefully collect the rice from Gimje.

The history of Iksan is supposed to have more priceless values than the current development.

It was where Geonmaguk, the powerful and influential ruling country from
the Mahan Era was, and it prospered during the Baekje times.
These facts were proven as the Mireuksaji and Wanggungri heritages were included
in the Baekje Historic Site which is one of the world heritage sites in UNESCO.

The generosity of Iksan,
beautiful sceneries

Iksan, where there is an impressive and vast plain land, has its special generosity. This is why the story of rich people and their generosity is being told in Hamra-myeon.

The Iksan-si part of Jeonbuk Cheolligil presents the generosity of Iksan, beautiful sceneries and also shows how prosperous the place was in the past.

In Hamra Mountain Doole-gil, you can cross Hamra-jae, following the trails of the three rich families legend, and see the Geum River which is another major rivers of Jeolla-do. In Mireuk Mountain Doole-gil, you can feel how prosperous the city was and also feel the breath of the long history. Woongpogomgaenaru-gil is like a martyr’s road that seeks to find Catholic heritages while seeing the sceneries of Geum River.

A road that gives you peace at heart. If you want to walk on a road where you see the mountains, rivers and hills, you should try visiting Iksan Provice now.

Hamra Mountain and Hamra Village

In Hamra-myeon, Iksan Province where the land is fertile, you can see Hamra Mountain at once.

This part of the Hamra Mountain is a historically meaningful place where the Tang army which General Su Dingfang led stayed. There is also the Gonggi Rock where Su Dingfang played gonggi game somewhere in the mountain.

Following the Three Rich Families’ houses,
you can walk along the stone wall path.

When you get into the village, the three rich families’ houses will tell you all about the history and the story of each family. The story of a poor man who became rich after visiting his wife’s family and starting an yeast business when the villagers recommended him to do so. The story of a person who helped a monk and got rich by building a house in the place the monk asked him to build a house on, Such legends and myths of the town’s rich families are interesting.

After you cross the steep Hamra-jae that comes after the village, you will be able to see the memories of the ancestors who went as far as Geum River through Hamra-jae. At the top of the ridge, you can cross the Swinging Bridge and go downward.
Below the Hamra-jae there is the gold mine, and there is a trustworthy story that tigers live here.

Dung Rock. It literally means that the people climbing the Hamra-jae relived themselves here.

After you pass by the Dung Rock where the people took a rest while looking at Geum river or relieved themselves, you will find a steep downward slope. When you carefully go down a little while, you will find a nice and well-paved road, and continue your journey.

When you meet the Thea Sinensis Colony, the farthest place in the north where the tea plant can grow, you are likely to slow down and feel the freshness of the forest through the breezes.

After you come down the Hamra Mountain, you will be able to find the Ibjeom-li Ancient tomb Exhibition Center. Here, you can see the aboriginal style that were excavated from the region, and also see the stone tomb style from the Baekje era. You can see how prosperous the civilization was through the gilt-bronze crown and the gilt-bronze shoes.

Sunset in Gomgaenaru. It looks grand.

As you walk the Geum riverside, you will see the Woongpo Gomgaenaru and think about its past when people moved grains to Mapo, Seoul. We cannot see such wealth now, but our hearts as as full and prosperous as in the past.

If the timing is good, you will be able to see the fantastic sunset that sets behind the bottom part of the Geum river. Another name of Geum River is ‘silk river’ and the beautiful sunset is probably why this name was made.

The prosperous old times have passed, but the beauty of the Geum river is still there.

Gomgaenaru is a place where ships departed to Mapo, Seoul from a long time ago. Facing the Geum river, the ships took off and the Deokyang-jeong and the big zelkova tree said their farewells. The prosperous old times have passed, but the beauty of the Geum river is still there.

The Woongpo village which you can see while walking along the Geum river bicycle trail is also known as Sandeul River Woongpo Village. This peaceful town is also known for the various activities it provides. It has been awarded the first place in all categories of the Rural Tourism Project.

Bungsae Hill Village also has an interesting story. The imaginary fish, Gon, has turned into a big, free bird, the Bung bird, which Chuang-tzu mentioned in his story.
In Bungsae Village, there is a rock that resembles this bird, and thus the name Bungsae Hill Village. It will also be interesting to find this rock.

Seongdang Port is a place where you can think back to the old memories.
There was the Seongdang-chang which managed the grains collected as taxes from the Goryeo period to the later Joseon era.
The Hwangpo vessle must have delivered the grain from this time.

In 1845, priest Kim daegun built the Nabawi Church to commemorate the arrival of Bishop Ferreol and priest Daveluy at the Hwangsan traject. The place itself is sacred.
The building is combined with traditional Korean style and the Western style.
